Just Like Home
|
From group show, Atmospheric Mapping The Gallery St Kilda Town Hall, St Kilda Collaborative piece with Josephine Rowbury August 2012 installation ceramic, muslin, textile threads Just Like Home recaptures the emotional atmosphere of disused rooms, outhouses, places of making, “back” rooms and sheds that are full of forgotten items. Sometimes these rooms house creatures that have moved in and become trapped. A moth flapping on a window is common in the rural shed, up close they have a delicate shimmer to their skin; creamy, pink, nude, silver, grey and white. Just Like Home was a site specific installation which used white fabric like brushstrokes, treating the panelled wall like a canvas. The moths are hidden from a distance, on closer inspection a frayed peep hole invites discovery. The work carries a feeling of lightness but the presence of the ceramic moth combined with sheer fabric and silky threads creates an engaging mix of materials. Fabric shredding and colour threading create the mystery— moths consuming fabric to build a cocoon. |
